Porsche's Iconic 911 Targa: A Historical Overview

Debut and Evolution

The Porsche 911 Targa made its debut at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt in September 1965. The distinctive body style, which featured a removable targa top, quickly became a beloved classic. For the latest generation 911 (992), the Targa premiered on Porsche's web-TV channel, 911 Magazine, on January 18th, 2020.

Engine and Performance

The base Carrera model of the 911 Targa utilizes the same 3596 cc flat-6 Boxer engine as the 996 Carrera. This naturally aspirated engine produces 350 horsepower and propels the Targa from 0 to 60 mph in under 5 seconds. At the higher end of the Targa lineup, the 911 Turbo boasts an impressive 420 horsepower and can reach speeds of up to 174 mph.

Variants and Updates

In 2015, Porsche introduced the 911 Targa 4 GTS at the North American International Auto Show. This performance-oriented variant featured a more powerful engine, upgraded suspension, and distinctive exterior styling. Porsche has since released numerous limited editions and special models of the 911 Targa, ensuring the legacy of this iconic sports car continues to captivate enthusiasts worldwide.
